Ventura County Air Pollution Control District Website

Ventura County Air Pollution Control District Website

Helping mission-driven organizations communicate clearly and effectively is what great digital work is all about. The newly launched website for the Ventura County Air Pollution Control District (VCAPCD) is a perfect example of how thoughtful design and smart functionality can elevate public service.

VCAPCD plays a vital role in monitoring and protecting the air quality of Ventura County, and their website needed to reflect the clarity, transparency, and technical expertise they bring to their work every day. So we rebuilt their site from the ground up—designing a modern, accessible, and fully responsive digital hub that makes it easier for both the public and internal staff to find what they need, fast.

Here’s a look at a few standout features we’re especially proud of:

  • Live Forecasts with a Streamlined Backend – We built a custom dashboard tool that allows VCAPCD’s forecast team to easily submit daily air quality and agricultural burn data. That info flows straight to the public-facing site—ensuring timely, accurate updates without needing complex content management steps.
  • Dynamic Visual Design That’s Functional and Fun – Yes, we went a little extra on this one—and we’re not sorry. As you scroll the page, the rotating color-coded headers change hue, synced with the anchor link hover states up top. These subtle design cues enhance navigation and keep things visually fresh. Oh, and don’t miss the animated icons, here and throughout the site, that add a little motion to the message.
  • A Better Way to Navigate Rule-making – One of the more complex tasks was reorganizing the air quality rule-making content. We developed a custom post type that makes it easy to see which rules are under review, when public hearings are happening (automatically pulled from the site calendar), and how users can submit comments or subscribe to updates. It’s a huge upgrade for transparency and public engagement.
  • Information Design That Clarifies Complex Content – Air quality planning can be heavy stuff, so we leaned into clear layouts and custom infographics to help distill key ideas and make the material more accessible to the general public.
  • A Custom Staff Directory – Need to contact someone at VCAPCD? We built an in-house filterable staff directory that makes it simple to find the right person based on department, name, or role. It’s a small thing with a big usability payoff.

From functionality to visuals, this website was designed to support VCAPCD’s vital work–and to serve the community with clarity and ease. We’re proud to deliver a platform that helps tell their story, simplify public access, and future-proof their digital presence.
